Super Bowl is upon us and NOPE we don’t watch it but my husband insist on having all the super bowl snacks and apps I can possibly put on a plate. This year I decided to try out some Pinterest recipes and the first on the list and on the stove since this morning has been the 5 Ingredient Chili. I figured it would be a quick and easy recipe to try out and 5 ingredients you can’t beat that.
No one will ever guess that this delicious chili was made with just 5 ingredients!
- 1 lb. ground beef or turkey*
- 3 (15 oz.) cans diced tomatoes with green chiles
- 2 (15 oz.) cans beans, drained (black beans, kidney beans, a combo, or whatever you like)
- 1 small white onion, diced
- 2 Tbsp. chili powder
- (optional toppings: shredded cheese, chopped green onions, sour cream, cilantro, etc.)
In a large stockpot, cook ground beef or turkey over medium-high heat until browned, stirring frequently. Drain the excess grease. Add remaining ingredients and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes or until the onion is cooked and softened.
Serve warm with additional toppings if desired.
So the recipe claims that no one will ever guess this was made with just 5 ingredients but I beg to differ. The chili was bland, tasteless and just not good.
Leaving me to alter the recipe I ended up adding the following:
- mustard powder
- more chili spice
- Italian seasoning
and it’s been simmering on the stove for the past two hours to really get the flavors to meld and combine.
After adding the additional ingredients I finally have a good pot of chili a stark reminder that you can have a pinterest fail or success just depend on how quickly you’re willing to give up on the recipe your making.
So have you tried the 5 ingredient chili? and if so what did you think about it?
